Yep, I was a day late, so I went to one of the more rural suburbs where the frenzy didn't hit quite so hard. They had shoes, a fair amount of girls clothes, some luggage and housewares left. I got a pair of grey tights and a candle. I was assured that they would be restocking asap. The manager said this release was 3 times more profitable than the Liberty of London and the Calypso releases combined!

My experiences have shown that the faster you address the problem the faster the situation will diffuse itself. I've had many people do a complete flip flop of tone and end up thanking me for responding so quickly (this tells me that most companies do a poor job responding to online inquiries if they respond at all).

If you know you need to consult with management, counsel, etc. buy yourself some time. Acknowledge the problem, indicate you need to do some research into the issue and that you will respond asap. I learned this one from my many years on a computer helpdesk. If you acknowledge the person complaining they will generally cut you some slack on solving it immediately.

Gene- really great point about monitoring your competitors. These tools make that monitoring even easier.

Genevieve- we're big fans of Radian6 over here at GDM (and at our sister company, OttoPilot Media). While many of our clients are not large enough to sustain the monthly fees, we'd love to see a small business version in the works with you folks. You're the best!

Hi Alexandra,

Thanks for mentioning our platform!

You provided a great starting place for smaller businesses who are just starting to explore social media. I also agree with Gene that monitoring your competitors can be a valuable way to see how others are talking to people within your same industry.

All the best,
Genevieve Coates

Don't forget to monitor your competitors! The nice thing about a RSS feed for a twitter search on a competitor is that you can follow what they do without being an actual Twitter follower.

As stated there is no perfect tool. Use all that are suggested and supplement where needed. There will always be a mention in one tool that is not discovered by the others.

I'd also suggest a clipping service for magazine/print articles for those companies/brands with a large enough presence to warrant it.
