That Moroccan vibe

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

Seems everywhere you look lately, there is a bit of Moorish here, a bit of Moroccan there. Pull a look together, or add a piece or two for a dash of spice.

Over the weekend, I was the incredibly fortunate recipient of a good friend’s generosity in sharing her “friends and family” pre-opening pass for the new IKEA store that is set to open this Wednesday, July 27th in Colorado!  The first ever store in Colorado, the masses have been waiting with baited breath since the announcement 3-1/2 years ago!

A great group consisting of uber-friend-with-the-pass, Jamie Foley of Sanctuary Home, Raina Cox, the brains and wit behind If The Lampshade Fits, Jamie’s great mum, and ME!!!!  For the sake of brevity, we shall forever more be the “designerds”.  We each had our own agenda, potential shopping list and high expectations.  We were greeted by parking attendants waving us into our allotted space, friendly faces and helpful customer service people abounded.  Smiles were the order of the day, and even with masses of people, nary a crack showed in the armor.

I know that many are critical of IKEA and their made-to-assemble furniture, but I am a firm believer in good design being available for any and all who appreciate it.  The business model works brilliantly, who can argue with 350+ stores worldwide?  A company that supports sustainability, works with UNICEF, has a Foundation that supports education and improving the lives of children has my vote!

Well, on to the good stuff – SHOPPING!  I just had a few things on my list, but in the stroll through the showroom, the marketplace, the aisles, the shelves and the endless (10,000 products) choices, a few other wonderful things caught my eye.

Something new!

Being forever on the hunt for something new, different, fun or special is always at the top of my list.  A little peek into what is currently on that list.

Granted, Zentique has been around for 7 years, (where have I been?), the price point is both designer and client friendly, and their product line encompasses lighting, accessories, art, seating, case pieces, beds, and I could keep going.  Suffice it to say, a great find.  Their Isabel Bench epitomizes all they have to offer.

Sustainable, eco-friendly, made in the USA, family-owned and about the funniest name I’ve heard in a while, what’s not to love?  Tritter Feefer is based out of Georgia, has numerous finish choices and a wide array of case pieces.  The Karina Chest, shown.

For an artisanal shot in the arm, Katie Leede & Company brings it home, with fabrics and pillows that showcase the designer’s love of art and nature fused with product.  Isis in Bluebyrd Plum, 2 additional colorways available.

Bridging past and future, Ro-Sham-Beaux lighting by Ann Yancy Rogers of Charleston, South Carolina brings a bespoke flair to any space, whether residential, hospitality or commercial.  The Helix, shown.

A bit like an upscale street market, Eloquence brings a Paris junket for antiques to an Internet near you, with architectural finds, objets d’art, case and upholstered pieces that have all the right stuff.  I am mad for a good Gothic arch, and the Rouen Mirror does not disappoint.

As the new year begins, mirrored furnishings and accessories are the stylish way to reflect.   The beauty, craftsmanship and quality of these finds speak for themselves, but Pottery Barn, Pier One Imports, Target and Z Gallerie offer well-priced sparklers, too.

Guest Blog Post: “The Corporate Side of Interior Design”

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

While you were busy preparing the financial statements of your company, you overlooked a very important factor. Don’t worry because this doesn’t refer to any miscalculation of your revenues or assets, rather you had skipped an integral part of your success: the interior design of your office. Don’t roll your eyes thinking that designing an office is a negligible and an irrelevant expenditure because getting some interior design ideas for your office is important.

Rogers Design Group (Office Design Ideas)

Decorating your office is as important as decorating your bedroom or your drawing room. It can have a very positive impression on your customers as well as your employees. Plus, it could be an indirect way to boost your revenues. The minute ‘revenue’ was included, your interest must have developed, so before you lose it, let’s have a peek at the corporate side of interior designing.

Designing the interior of your corporation includes designing your offices, work rooms, boardrooms, and other spaces inside your office premises. It may cover everything starting from your office bathroom to your conference room.

Interior designers who specialize in designing commercial interiors usually work with corporate clients to create professional yet tasteful environments. An office will give a professional touch with appropriate office furniture, carpeting, flooring and lightening, along with the regular office items such as proper electric systems for computers and other office equipments.

Sometimes, you don’t just need to fill in your office space. Rather, simply arrange the existing furniture in an appropriate manner to give it a different look. Before you decide on how your office should look, review your company’s goals and objectives. You can’t close your eyes and bring your office some casual furniture when your work requires you to act formally. It is important to have a clear idea on what type of visitors or clients your company is expecting or hoping to attract.

Clients are like company guests who can bring either profit or loss to your financial statements. So, if you make your clients happy, surely they will please you by contributing to the profits. To take extra care, make them comfortable. This can be done by having a waiting area which is decorated perfectly to match the corporate environment, but is riveting enough that it doesnít allow your clients to move unless they sign a contract or close a deal.

After you have dealt with your client’s needs, you must also consider your employee’s preferences. They are the ones who will make the deal work out for the clients, thus compelling them to visit the company’s waiting room again to close some more deals. A deal or contract which was induced by a pleasant corporate environment ends well only when your employees are given a comfortable environment. The goal of professional interior designing is to provide a perfect corporate environment that is cozy yet conducive to efficient working habits.

Lighting is included in your corporate interior designing. Lights too bright or too dim can affect their productivity and can be the result of your company’s doom. Depending on what’s most suitable, add some pendant lighting, wall sconces, or ceiling lights.

As interior designing can influence efficiency and productivity, it should be considered closely rather than being classified as an extra expense.

…they’re creepy, and they’re spooky…

Monday, October 25th, 2010

In celebration of the Celtic festival of Samhain, a precursor to our modern-day Halloween, the border between our world and the netherworld becomes thin, and you never know what frights you might find as your abode gets in on the mischief-making, along with all of the other ghoulies and goblins.  Trick or treat?  Won’t you come in……

Setting the perfect tone in the entry, Graham & Brown’s “Skulls” wallpaper designed by Barbara Hulanicki, and available through 2modern.

You may want to watch your step on Flor’s Funny Bones area rug.

Perhaps “Ghastly Bats” by Alexander Henry for draperies, also available in 4 other colorways.

The accessories always make the room, don’t they? (cue the evil laughter…..)

Pottery Barn gets in on the creepy fun with Mini-Skull Vase Filler.

Shine on with the Bronze Skull Lamp by Blackman Cruz.

And no table would be complete without the black widow spider plates by Custom Sepia.

Oh, and that table is by the brilliant French designer, John Nouanesing entitled “Paint or Die but Love Me”.

The fun and the frights have just begun!
